Jodhpurs are ankle length pants made of reinforced fabric designed to protect the legs of equestrian riders. The jodhpur originated from an Indian style of trouser called the Churidar, which is still worn at traditional Jodhpury weddings. Sir Pratap Singh, an avid polo player, visited Queen Victoria during the later 19th century, bringing along the unique riding pants that are jodhpurs. This style was a sensational hit in England at the time, particularly because Singh’s team won most of their polo matches and the jodhpur was soon linked with success. The British polo community soon took up the jodhpur as their regular wear, adapting the style with traditional English breeches to create a new variant on the traditional Indian jodhpur. Savile Row tailors of London were the original manufacturers of this new British style of jodhpur.
